. the president is otherwise leading absent those yellow states with 237 electoral votes to mitt romney's 191. in ohio a public policy polling survey shows that president obama is leading by 4 percentage points, plus yesterday a columbus dispatch poll had the president up nine points. so let's give those 18 electoral votes to president obama, brings him to 255 and romney 191. in florida a poll shows president obama leading by 1 percentage point. that's until the margin of error, so we'll keep those as a toss up at yellow. out in iowa -- again these are all polls out today -- in iowa there was a we ask america poll showing president obama 44%. we'll give the president those electoral votes. things are looking better, though, for mitt romney in north carolina. in north carolina the arg poll shows romney leading 50-46%. and a ppp poll out today that shows it all even. so we'll keep that state in the toss-up column. there are 36 days until the election. this election actually despite everything you are hearing it is still up in the air. so don't count your chickens folk. back

for mitt romney. even more specifically than the swing states just ohio and florida, double-digit deficit in florida. almost double-digit deficit in ohio. we can probably win -- there is a slight path to victory without winning ohio, there really isn't one i see without winning florida. and though mitt romney is making a play for ohio and is very committed to competing in those two states we're starting to hear rumblings from smart republicans who say maybe they would be better offon pulling from ohio and investing in florida. and then through some combination of these other swing states which you would almost have to run the table pull out a victory in the electoral college, but the math is tough. >> eliot: when you are down that much in swing states it is tough to get the tech tonic plates to move. what would you counsel him? >> i don't think it's about picking and choosing on the map. when you look at the senate races they are falling apart even more for republicans, which i think may be a leading indicator for romney. it doesn't make sense to me that ohio florida,

. ohio is perhaps the most critical swing state with 18 electoral votes. romney losing ohio would mean he has no shot at the white house. that does follow suit with history. no republican candidate has ever become president without carrying ohio. recent polls show romney is down in the state by anywhere from 4 to 7 points against the president. so he's not doing great in ohio but he's faring well financially after a trip to los angeles over the weekend. romney brought in $6 million in just one night at a fund-raiser in beverly hills where about 1500 people paid up to $50,000 each to see the candidate speak. ann romney ran into a little trouble when her plane had to make an emergency landing this weekend. she is safe and sound but her husband was naturally a little bit nervous especially because he cannot figure out why airplane windows don't go down. romney told the "los angeles times" that's the biggest problems with a plane in trouble is you can't get anymore oxygen on the plane because the windows do not roll down. o
